OpenGameCompressor compresses installed games in place with the filesystem's transparent compression (btrfs zstd on Linux, WOF on Windows), with a desktop app and a command line.

Test build of OpenGameCompressor for Linux, built by CI from main at f1c633f. It is meant for testing, not yet for everyday use.

    Downloads

    • opengamecompressor-0.1.0-x86_64.tar.gz: the bundle for any distribution, including SteamOS, Bazzite and Fedora Atomic. It needs glibc ≥ 2.28, and the desktop app also needs glibc ≥ 2.35, GTK ≥ 4.14, libadwaita ≥ 1.6 and Pango ≥ 1.56 from the system. Check it against the .sha256 file.
    • opengamecompressor-0.1.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst: the Arch Linux package (sudo pacman -U <file>).

    Install the bundle

    sha256sum -c opengamecompressor-0.1.0-x86_64.tar.gz.sha256
    tar -xf opengamecompressor-0.1.0-x86_64.tar.gz
    opengamecompressor-0.1.0-x86_64/install.sh --user

This installs into ~/.local and touches nothing outside the home folder. install.sh says so if the desktop app cannot start on the system; ogc on the command line works either way. Remove it with ~/.local/share/opengamecompressor/uninstall.sh or the uninstall.sh in the bundle.

Converting a drive to btrfs (the migration) also needs the helper in system/, installed with sudo system/install-helper.sh. On a read-only system it goes in as a systemd system extension. See the README.

    Before testing

    • Games are compressed only on btrfs. Check the file system of the game library first, for example findmnt -no FSTYPE --target ~/.local/share/Steam.
    • ogc list and ogc analyze only read. They are safe to try first.
    • If the library is on ext4, compressing it needs the drive migration to btrfs. That rewrites the drive, so back up anything you cannot download again before trying it, or test it on a second drive or a microSD card.
